Soil nutrients cause threefold increase in pathogen and herbivore impacts on grassland plant biomass

چکیده
A combination of theory and experiments predicts that increasing soil nutrients will modify herbivore microbial impacts on ecosystem carbon cycling. However, few studies herbivores have measured both fluxes pools. Even more rare are manipulating microbes look at cycling responses. We added to a long-term, experiment foliar fungi, mammalian arthropods in low fertility grassland. gross primary production (GPP), respiration (ER), net exchange (NEE) plant biomass throughout the growing season determine how consumer Nutrient addition increased above-ground GPP, but not ER, resulting an increase uptake rate. Reducing fungi biomass. Nutrients amplified effects biomass, such had threefold larger impact fertilized plots. Synthesis. Our work demonstrates resources rates as well animal fungal production. Taken together, ongoing nutrient pollution may drive

Herbivore impact on grassland plant diversity depends on habitat productivity and herbivore size.
Mammalian herbivores can have pronounced effects on plant diversity but are currently declining in many productive ecosystems through direct extirpation, habitat loss and fragmentation, while being simultaneously introduced as livestock in other, often unproductive, ecosystems that lacked such species during recent evolutionary times. The biodiversity consequences of these changes are still poo...
متن کاملHow Fencing Affects the Soil Quality and Plant Biomass in the Grassland of the Loess Plateau
Overgrazing is a severe problem in several regions in Northwestern China and has caused serious land degradation. Secondary natural succession plays an important role in the accumulation of soil carbon and nitrogen contents. Estimating the effects of grazing exclusion on soil quality and plant diversity will improve our understanding of the succession process after overgrazing and promote judic...

متن کاملThe Root Herbivore History of the Soil Affects the Productivity of a Grassland Plant Community and Determines Plant Response to New Root Herbivore Attack
Insect root herbivores can alter plant community structure by affecting the competitive ability of single plants. However, their effects can be modified by the soil environment. Root herbivory itself may induce changes in the soil biota community, and it has recently been shown that these changes can affect plant growth in a subsequent season or plant generation. However, so far it is not known...
متن کاملImpacts of plant diversity on biomass production increase through time because of species complementarity.
Accelerating rates of species extinction have prompted a growing number of researchers to manipulate the richness of various groups of organisms and examine how this aspect of diversity impacts ecological processes that control the functioning of ecosystems. We summarize the results of 44 experiments that have manipulated the richness of plants to examine how plant diversity affects the product...
